Exterior decorative boards

Engineered timber panels such as oriented strand boards (OSBs), plywood and medium density fibreboard (MDF) are practical, sustainable and versatile building products that are light, easy to shape and install. This makes them ideal for use as exterior decorative boards. What are decorative exterior boards?

Exterior decorative boards can be used for a range of applications in domestic and commercial buildings that include soffits and siding, fascia, doors and accent boards. Commercial applications include store displays, outdoor signs and marketing boards as well as hoarding and facades.

Sustainable timber building materials such as OSB, plywood and MDF are lightweight, easy to transport and fast to install. Timber manufactured boards not offer design flexibility, ease of machining and fixing without specialist tools but they also provide high mechanical strength and structural integrity.

Plywood, MDF and OSB that has been graded at level 3 and above have basic level moisture resistance. When used as decorative exterior boards, boards should be primed and waterproofed to ensure they are protected from moisture ingress that could affect their strength and performance. To achieve a high quality finish, the surface of all timber manufactured boards needs to be smoothed before priming, especially if they will be painted or printed on. If laminated, smoothing and priming of the surface is a prerequisite of material compatibility and finish quality.

Arctek® Technology helps achieve the design but crucially it improves the moisture resistance of OSBs and timber construction materials. The robust moisture barrier on the surface of the exterior decorative boards helps extend their lifecycle even if the boards are exposed to the elements. Where Arctek® Technology is specified for UV protection, it helps minimise colour drift, keeping the external decorative surfaces looking like new over extended periods in direct sun.

The overlay performance solution is applied in factory conditions and the decorative exterior boards are delivered to the site ready to install and protected from elements. The off-site application of Arctek® Technology ensures a uniform, high quality finish for all boards.
